While Sunbathers Ran From Violence, Viral Image Shows Beach Patrol Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, has always considered the renowned shoreline as her back yard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, like many others in the area, noticed pops ringing out across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw told her something was wrong.

Positioned on the avenue, speaking to a duo who had hurried up the incline still dripping wet, she became aware of someone coming up behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the direction that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that sizeable pack and barefoot … He was sprinting at something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to go in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism In the Wake of Chaos

The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of heroism in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, officers and ambulance crews attending to many victims.

Collective Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to come out of the local area, with the beach facility next to the location of the violence transforming into a temporary medical station. It was shared that colleagues were also seen taking action, including going into the ocean to save people needing help.

After the events, comments of appreciation flooded in. One post conveyed thanks for the responders who showed that “compassion will always conquer darkness”.

The group of lifeguards published a message, explaining they were “processing what transpired”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your supportive messages and support. We are touched by the care shown towards our personnel,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the aim that it aids those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that hires many full-time beach safety officers, remarked that the team performed exceptionally from the moment the violence began through to late that evening.

“People have shared so many moving accounts, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a local official.

“Our lifeguards exhibit dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores secure for visitors, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and grapple with the terror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much positivity we have observed in the face of such darkness.”
