Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria

Security breach at educational facility
Schools in Nigeria's northern region have repeatedly come under attack for armed groups

Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an assault against a female high school in north-western Nigeria, according to police.

The armed faction breached the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, police confirmed.

The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, according to a statement.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.

Community members told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The authorities announced they had sent "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.

In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have increasingly been targeted for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to seek ransom payments or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has worsened considerably in recent months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the conflict.
