Court hearings in Manhattan on Tuesday revealed that police officers involved with the capture of Luigi Mangione were so doubtful of a tip on his location that they bantered about a reward sandwich in SMS exchanges.
"He said, 'if you apprehend the New York City shooter, I’ll buy you a hoagie from a nearby eatery,'" testified Police Officer Joseph Detwiler of the Pennsylvania force. "I replied, 'Regard it done.'"
In less than an hour, Detwiler learned that this seemingly unreliable lead was accurate.
The Apprehension at a Quick-Service Restaurant
The suspect was captured in Pennsylvania at a McDonald's on 9 December 2024 in connection with the killing of Brian Thompson. Thompson's fatal shooting on a New York City street on 4 December 2024 had ignited a widespread search and fueled public anger.
Following the call center's orders, Detwiler and a colleague proceeded to the McDonald's. "Upon arrival, I observed the male seated at a table there, near the bathrooms," Detwiler said. The man was wearing a bulky jacket, brown hat and blue face covering, just as the tipster had said.
Detwiler inquired of the man for his identification and explained that "someone called, they believed you were suspicious". He asked for ID, which the man provided. This ID would later be revealed as fake.
Detwiler also requested the man to pull down his face covering. "At that moment, I realized it was him immediately," Detwiler stated.
Legal Proceedings and Proof Challenge
The officer's testimony came on the day two of a possibly weeklong hearing about whether proof was collected illegally during the suspect's interaction with officers. Mangione's lawyers have consistently argued for the exclusion of evidence secured during his detention, alleging he was not immediately informed of his legal protections.
The audio recording documenting Detwiler's call was presented in court.
"There's a male in the restaurant that looks like the NYC suspect," police dispatch informed Detwiler.
Detwiler replied: "Affirmative. We will be on that."
When questioned about his tone, Detwiler clarified, "At the time, I was being semi-sarcastic when I said. Frankly, I did not think it was going to be the individual that they thought it was."
The Critical Moments After Recognition
Detwiler testified he "stayed composed" after recognizing Mangione and contacted his sergeant. "Yes, he's present. It's him," Detwiler recalled stating.
On the phone conversation, Detwiler emphasized that he was not kidding. "He was surprised, because he was the one who sent me the SMS when we received the call," about the promised hoagie.
Detwiler attempted to act as casually as he could, telling Mangione that police were there over complaints that he had been lingering too a while. Officer-worn footage showed Mangione eating food.
"I inquired him if it was a steak sandwich," Detwiler stated. He responded affirmatively. "I then said it was my favorite." His goal, he explained, was "simply attempting to keep things peaceful and normal."
A Significance of the Mask
How much of a role Mangione's mask played in attracting suspicion remains unclear.
When questioned about mask culture in the area, Detwiler said, "We do not use masks. We have natural immunity."
And since "hardly anyone wears them" in that locale, Detwiler knew the man they would subsequently confirm as the suspect was the individual who had caused concern. "The individual had a mask on," Detwiler said. "Therefore he had to be the man we were dispatched there for."
Defense Questioning
Karen Agnifilo, one of Mangione's lawyers, examined Detwiler after the prosecution wrapped its questioning. She focused on particulars surrounding his recognition of Mangione.
Agnifilo noted that the dispatch call was labeled as "not urgent". "The call didn't sound serious on the radio, no," Detwiler agreed. She also pointed out that emergency signals were not activated.
Agnifilo implied through her line of inquiry that the speed of the positive ID seemed off. "So, in that instant, two seconds into observing him, you know: he's the NYC murder suspect?"
Detwiler again that he was sure. "Absolutely no uncertainty in my mind."
Agnifilo also sought to establish that her client was detained without being informed of his rights. She questioned the police's physical position in the restaurant, suggesting they were positioned to block him from leaving.
Detwiler said that he and his partner needed space. "We are not going to stand beside each other and hold each other's hands."
