Waste criminals have deposited a massive amount of rubbish in a open space in Oxfordshire.

The "ecological disaster unfolding in full view" is around 150m (490ft) long and 6m (20ft) in height.

The massive heap has materialized in a plot of land next to the River Cherwell close to Kidlington.

A local MP raised the issue in parliament, declaring it was "posing risk of an environmental disaster".

Conservation group stated the unlawful waste site was formed around a few weeks back by an criminal network.

"This is an environmental catastrophe taking place in plain sight.

"Every day that passes elevates the risk of toxic drainage getting into the river system, polluting animals and putting at risk the wellbeing of the whole watershed.

"Regulatory bodies must act promptly, not in the distant future, which is their standard reaction time."

A restriction order had been put in place by the Environment Agency.

Addressing elected representatives on recently, he declared: "Criminals have deposited a mountain of unauthorized plastic waste... weighing substantial weight, in my district on a riverside area alongside the River Cherwell.

"Environmental authorities said it has limited capabilities for compliance, that the estimated price of removal is greater than the whole yearly budget of the municipal authority."

Environment minister stated the administration had inherited a failing recycling sector that had resulted in an "growing issue of illegal dumping".

She advised representatives the agency had issued a prohibition notice to prevent more entry to the site.

In a statement, the agency said it was examining the situation and appealed for evidence.

It stated: "We understand the citizens' concern about incidents like this, which is why we respond against those responsible for waste crime."

A newly released study determined efforts to tackle significant waste crime have been "critically under-prioritised" even though the issue growing more extensive and more sophisticated.
