In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract with the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The deal features a seven-figure signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to compensation of sixteen million for the upcoming season and seventeen million for the following year.

Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for being named the league MVP award.
• Half a million dollars for finishing second or third in MVP voting.
• $250,000 for placing fourth through 10th.
• Another $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.

The agreement includes that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his permission and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the contract. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between the U.S. and Japan.

Compensation and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's Central League. The Yakult organization would also receive a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.

Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to suit up for the Chicago franchise, following reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a young group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a difficult season, placing last in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.

Having earned league MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami made history with a record-breaking 2022 season where he hit 56 home runs, breaking the single-season record for a NPB hitter formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to secure Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was limited to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with striking out 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in 892 contests. Early in his career playing mainly at first base, he has since transitioned to third.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off double that scored two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling one-run win. The following day in the final against the USA, he hit a game-tying home run in the second inning, helping Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be formally introduced at a media availability on the coming Monday.
